Zip system opinions

The contractor installing our new roof sheathing is installing Zip system panels. I've never used this sheathing but I know it's been around for a while. My only concern is that it's basically OSB with a coating on top. How does it compare long term to plywood and tar paper?

Personally, I would still be using felt over it no matter what... your shingle instructions will say to.

On the coast of NC is very commonly used. It provides water protection for the house even when the roofing material gets blown off. Tar paper gets shredded and blown off pretty quickly once the shingles or steel is gone. I don't think it hurts to add a layer of tar paper if you want but I don't know if it offers any benefit. If I had to re-roof my house including the sheeting I would be using it or another similar product.

I talked to my contractor about that. He said materials cost him about $1200 more over plywood sheathing but he makes up most of that in labor and material (felt) savings. Plus he said he can leave it exposed for a longer period.
