You rip a piece of siding down to 1 1/8" wide on a table saw and nail it on.

And prime and paint all cut edges? How about using their standard trim pieces or rip some treated lumber to width?

Whatever turns you on. 3/8 plywood ripped the right width would do the same thing. But you usually rip the top row of your siding anyway, which is why I said you just use siding. Cut edge up, finished edge down. Take one rip off of a piece then save all those pieces for your top row. You will likely be ripping that piece again to make it fit.

I use vinyl lattice strips.
Any HD or Lowe's has them
Never going to rot, not going to shatter like trying to rip strips out of the siding.

Where do you get that? They don't break, I've done it this way for years.

LP Smart Siding started going on my house yesterday. The siding guys ripped strips from the siding and painted the raw edges. The siding strips didn't shatter and the 16' strips didn't break.
