Caulk Siding

I was painting my porch and jumped up on the ladder and noticed what looked like caulk was gone around the siding and siding to short in the j channel. Is it fine to just recaulk it? Picture

The bottom edge of the siding should not be caulked. If you caulk it, water will get trapped behind it with no way to get out except to leak into the wall. If you want to caulk the left end that's fine.

That second picture has me the most worryed.
The way it was done is forming a funnel for water to get in.
I'm not seeing anything done the way I would have done it!
Looks like someone took the easy, cheap way to side this.
I would have made my own Z molding and had it running at least 4" up the wall, and made sure it was tabbed at the ends to keep water out.
No way would I ever wrap the rakes like that!
The way it was done leaves gaps every 4" for insects to get in.
The right way would have been to wrap the trim making sure to make a 1" bend to sit on the wall to keep water out and a place to nail it so you do not see the nails.
Then install 5/8 J molding for the siding to slip into.
Over that header I would have installed starter strip, not J mold, about 1/2" above the Z molding so there is no j molding forming a funnel directing water to the outside edges.
If vinyl siding and coil stock is installed correctly there is no need for caulking.

Joe, is it safe to caulk that left side to seal it for now?
