How to you "seal" a shutter against lap siding?

A few years ago I had my siding and shutters replaced. I was amazed at how many wasp nests were hidden behind the siding and shutters. I am building a detached garage and planning out the exterior. With the shutters laying on top of the siding it leaves gaps for wasps to get in there and create nests.

What options do I have to seal these gaps?

You can cut filler pieces to block off those wedge shaped openings. I would avoid using anything sticky like foam as it could be a real mess in the future.

This is normal. And in most cases the wasp do no harm. Unless you have a particular need to prevent them from nesting why bother. I would however suggest you do not use any type of spray. The spray could stain the siding or react with the sunlight. You could spray water from the hose even couple days to wash out any wasp that begin to build a nest.
There is also the natural method method but that includes natural enemies of wasp , such as prey mantises, spider and other bugs. But the alternative might be worse that the cure.

I had a really bad experience with wasps years ago. It still bothers me. I do everything I can to stay away from them.

The shutters would be black. I was thinking I could use some black foam weatherstripping.

You dont, it's just one of those "things" that there is no real fix.

I have never seen any fillers and I would not advise any tape or sealer as that will probably create a bigger issue.

I have the exact same situation and have considered making up a week solution of pesticide to pour down the siding but fear staining so I just deal with it!

You probably wouldn't have wasps if the shutters were a style that was solid. The vinyl ones are hollow backed.
