Capping and brickmold

When installing trim around the exterior of a door, do I have to use brickmold even if I plan on capping it with aluminum? If so, can I get away with cutting 2x4s to size instead of using actual brickmold?
Or what suggestions do you have?

Brickmold is just a fancy shaped 2x4. The only reason for the fancy shape is aesthetics. So, yes you can use 2x4 or 2x2 wrapped in trim stock around the door depending on the look you want.
