Hardie board over vertical cedar sidng?

Hi - I am new here and unfortunately bought a home where the woodpeckers go after the siding. We are thinking about putting hardie board on. Is it okay to have it installed over the existing siding or is it best to remove our current siding? I really appreciate the help!

The biggest reason you would want to remove the old siding and trim is that the depth of the new siding (when placed on top of the old) would probably build it out beyond your windows. You have to be able to caulk the edges of the siding to your corners and to your windows or window trim.

Did just what you ask about ten years ago. Installers wrapped all the wood windows in aluminum trim. Worked fine. But all window trim was proud of the old siding.
