New steel exterior door in existing frame?
What are my chances for being able to install a new exterior steel door in an existing frame?
I customized a composite frame for a door into my garage. Everything is finished now (brickmold installed and sealed), so I'd hate to have to tear it out, but now that old door looks bad (rust holes).
Yes, I should have bought a new door to begin with, but I didn't (lesson learned).
Thanks in advance.

If you get a blank door, one without the hinges spots routed out and without the lock holes, I think your chances are pretty good. Obviously you'll need to confirm that the width and height match your opening. If you get a door that has been prepared for hinges and locks then A: you get lucky and everything lines up and it's a really easy install or, B: the hinge & lock locations are just a bit off and you have to do rework to make it fit.

Thanks Pilot Dane
One of the things that I don't know about is how or if the new steel doors are mortised for the hinges.
With my existing door, the hinges were surface mounted to the edge of the door. The frame was/is mortised for the hinges.

You will just have to see what doors are available in your area. I doubt you will find what you want on the shelf so you probably will have to check with the special order or commercial counter to see what they can order for you.
