axle wheel bearings

I packed the wheel bearings on one side of my trailer and noticed that neither axle had a large washer on the nut side of the outer wheel bearing. There is a was washer but it's not as big as the wheel bearing. Is this normal or should the washer be the same size or slightly larger than the bearing?

..... and why did I never notice this before? I've owned the trailer for well over 20 yrs. Or did I notice and since forgotten? It sucks to get old and can't remember stuff

I don't think it makes any difference, Mark. The washer is to allow the nut to slip while tightening and large or small it only pushes on the inner race of the bearing.

Thanks, it just looked a little odd ..... or hit me that way
Unlike a lot of axles, these don't have the big washer with the tab that goes in the slot - no slot, just threads and the hole for the cotter pin.
