Question Painting a mural on knockdown textured walls

I am painting a mural in my daughters room that has the "new house" knockdown texture on the walls. The mural is from CreataToon and needs to be traced on the walls before I can paint it in.

Is it better to sand down the walls to smooth them out or fill in the grooves with joint compound? I have been advised to do both and don't know which is better.

Thanks. :-)

i think it's easier & less messy to fill in than sand down. get some joint compound and a broad knife & skim coat the wall. you can "sand" it in between coats with a damp sponge (almost no dust!)
