Fake window in Basement
I am not sure if this is the right location for this post but here goes.
I was thinking of cutting a hole in the furred out wall in my basement to put in a fake window. I was thinking of using an <edit>translucent<edit> material to fill in the panes. I was thinking of installing a double hung window and back lighting it to give the illusion of daylight.
My questions are any suggestions for an opaque material either glass, plexiglass, <edit>translucent<edit> sticker,...?
The other question is any suggestions for back lighting? I want it to give the illusion of daylight so I was thinking I don't want the light footcandles to vary too much.
Thanks for any advice

LED xmac lights will give you a low inexpensive light source. Back painting glass works great and leaves an easy to clean surface. As opposed to plexi which can scratch. Although plexi is available in a variety of colors.
So you don't feel too out of the ordinary, fake windows will be very much a part of out future. With the advent of flat screen displays, it will soon be possible to fake a window with a view from anywhere around the world, or beyond if NASA will cooperate. The possibilities are interesting.

But you don't really mean opaque do you? You mean translucent. You might check out a local art school and put a request on a student bulletin board for someone to paint a mural on your window.

FYI: I ended up with an octagonal window that I sprayed with a frosted glass paint (interior - hidden side) that I picked up at my local hardware store. It is mounted in the opening and held in-place with magnets so I can access the back lights. I have the lights connected to a dimmer switch.
