Need ideas for table legs

I have a white oak Spanish style table that I made. I sanded the top down and restained it darker. The legs are highly carved. I don't want to hassle with sanding them down but now they clash with the dark walnut table. I need to have them darker. Without sanding, can someone give me some ideas to do to them?

Welcome to the forums!

For any coating to bond correctly you need to sand first or at least wipe it down with a liquid deglosser. A tinted poly like minwax's polyshades can be used to darken up the legs. It can be very difficult to apply over wood with a lot of detail. Tinted poly must be applied evenly and can't be over brushed! Runs, drips, lap marks, etc will all have more color and appear darker. It would probably be best to spray multiple light coats to achieve the desired coloring.

Tinting the poly looks funny in the end and will not match the rest unless the same process is followed for the whole piece. Take the time to scuff the whole piece and you will be happier in the end.

Not sure I follow topshop's reasoning but it is possible to alter a finish with tinted poly and get it reasonably close. Scuff sanding is always a good idea.

It doesn't have to exactly match the top.
