spray paint rusty cast iron

I painted one coat of rustoleum paint and primer in one spray paint over a rusty cast iron drain pipe. It has some light surface rusting and few spots of deeper rusting.

So its likely not going to do much right? What will likely occur?

further, I mentioned the same question to my neighbor and he said I shouldn't have spray paitned it because spray paint will make the pipe corrode quicker. Is that true?

Ideally, you should have coarse sanded or wire brushed it and used a rusty metal primer/rust converter and then a proper paint. What you did won't really do anything except make it look better for a few years maybe.

Make it corrode faster? That's just silly. Might want to take the neighbors advice with a grain of salt from now on.

The paint may conceal further corrosion for a while, but it won't quicken it.

You do better brushing/rolling the paint on. Paint has to be drastically thinned in order to atomize and come out of a rattle can tip. The thicker the coat of paint is, the better the protection is.

"paint may conceal further corrosion for a while, but it won't quicken it" - I agree!

So I tried to paint it white. After 30 minutes, a bunch of moist looking rust colored pinhole size dots started to leach thru.

Is that the nature of rust and a result of my lack of preperation?

Hard to say without seeing it - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...your-post.html

It's not to late to sand it and apply another coat or two
