Stone Fencing

I'm just wondering what an average price per linear foot (6' high) is in Southern California (LA area) for something like soapstone? There seem to be only a few contractors out here that do stone fencing like that, so I want to be sure I'm not getting charged too much. I also understand that the price of rock (and concrete, etc) has really gone up a lot recently.

Thanks for any info

Get estimates from 3 or 4 contractors who do stone fences like you have in mind and compare prices. Also get and CHECK references -- go look at their work.

Yes, the cost of materials has gone up a lot. 5 years ago concrete was about $50 to $60/yd. -- it's now about $100. Stones are transported by trucks. 2 years ago diesel (at least here) was $1.65/gal. -- it's now over $3.00. (I know -- I buy 2 tanks a week!!)

Slumpstone

When I said "soapstone", I actually meant slumpstone

Looks like prices are around $60-$75 per linear foot for 6' height - does that sound about right? $100/yd for concrete is low, compared to around here - I've heard $150/yd.

Stone Fencing

Slumpstone makes more sense - I think of it as Slump block that is used for privacy walls.

Contact the sales departments at Orco Block or Angelus Block in the LA area or RCP Block in San Diego area. They should be able to aim you at a contractor or two that build walls.

Depending on your personal preference or local architectural standards, there are other architectural units that may be acceptable at a different cost.

Slump block are available in 4" & 6" heights, while other styles are 8" high and can be cheaper from a lobor standpoint. They will not give you a slump appearance though.

Of course YOUR concrete is $150/yd. and it's ONLY $100/yd. here. part of the price you pay for living south of Corning!!
