Using existing metal post fro PVC fencing

Hello,

Can anyone share your thoughts on th follwing: I want to remove our chainlink fencing and replace it with PVC. Can we eliminate the extra work of cutiing the metal posts and keep them foe the PVC fencing. Most are spaced about 6' apart. I guess is a matter of spacing the PVC post sleeve in the right plae and pouring cement. Would this complicate the whole project?

I think that you should install the fence per manufacturer recommendations, not what would seem to be the easiest and quickest. The fence should last for years, and that is what you will get by following the directions that come along with the fence. The end result will look like a professional installation and not something thrown together with duct tape and some string. You may also void any warantees if you vary from the recommended installation methods.

Lock for Sliding Gate

I've just installed a new cedar privacy fence around the perimeter of my backyard with a top-mounted sliding gate. Right now, when the gate is closed, I secure the bottom to the side posts on either end with simple hook-and-eye hardware. I'd like something less provisional and more secure. I want to be able to lock the gate closed, but I can't find the right hardware online so far. Slide bolts appropriate for swinging gates would be ineffectual for my sliding one, and I can't figure out how to search for a slide bolt that can turn and catch so as not to secure the gate laterally. I'm trying to avoid the hassle of a drop bolt or cane bolt into the ground. Surely, there's a simple solution? If anyone has experience with a similar scenario, I'd be grateful for guidance!Read More

Hi, Building 250' of wood fence. Fence will be alternating 1x4 and 1x6 cedar boards spaced 1" apart on three PT rails. Going to use 2 3/8 galv. posts with Simpson PGT brackets. My question is about the sequence when setting the posts - do I need to fill the hole with concrete and then insert the post INTO the concrete or do it like I would a wood post and have it in the hole and then pour in the concrete? Do I need to do anything to the base of the post to cause it to bond better with the concrete (e.g. rough up with grinder, drill & insert rebar "pins" at 90 angle, etc)? Any and all experienced advice will be welcomed! Spent the weekend getting 39 holes dug in very rocky soil (it was tough digging even with an auger on a skidsteer) - now I'm looking forward to the "easy" part of this job. Thanks!Read More
