Options for white picket fence

We would like a white picket fence in front of our new home.

I have been looking at options of wood vs vinyl.
Seems like wood is cheaper.

But I am not sure if vinyl will last as long, or look bad after a certain number of years.

If I buy treated lumber for the posts will they accept paint ok?
Would I also buy treated lumber for the rest of the fence? Or would I use cedar or something else?

Welcome to the forums!

IMO vinyl would be best. I've never inspected any up close but it seems to weather well.

PT wood needs to dry/weather some before it's painted. Oil base primer is best but latex is preferred for the top coat. You could also use a solid white stain. Cedar must be primed with a good oil base exterior wood primer. Cedar tends to have tannin bleed which will stain light colors - oil primer will help to prevent that.

It's all about the maintenance! Vinyl can be cleaned every few years and look just fine. Treat it just like vinyl siding basically...NO PRESSURE WASHING. Any wood will need painting on a regular basis to maintain the looks, and thats no fun.

Vinyl...higher initial cost...much less maintenance costs

Wood... more natural and traditional look...lower initial cost...higher repair/maintenance costs

Make sure you space whatever you get up off the ground a little bit, otherwise you will damage anything while weedwacking. Using a scissor type hand trimmer would avoid that.

The new property is an acre wide.
Minus the house and garage that the fence will butt against.

So I need to figure out the costs to purchase the vinyl product...

You will need to measure the linear feet so you know how much fence you'll need.
