Need help with a handrail..
So my buddy got a letter from our local municipality saying he needs a handrail installed on his steps.
I need some ideas on how to install a rail for him. Need something quick, and hopefully without having to set any posts. As you can see, there is not a lot of support available.
TIA,
Shain

Well, you will need a post of some type. Something has to hold the hand rail. It does not look like there is good structure at the top of the stairs so you may have to set two posts. One at each end of the railing.

The height of the rail has to be at least 30" from the nose, of the treads. The balusters have to be no more than 4" apart. If you have a PhD (post hole digger), you can dig the holes for two posts, in about a 1/2 hour. Don't cut them until you take the measurements & find the angle. Set one post against the top tread as close as you can to the landing & another post against the bottom tread.

Decks higher than 30" from grade require steps. Handrail height is generally 34-38" as measured from the tread nosing (some say 36" minimum) and guardrail height is usually 42". Guardrail and handrail are not the same thing.

Oh yeah, didn't notice he's in canada. Could have sworn NY's rcnys section r315 called for 34-38".
