Best posts for 8' high fence

What is the best wood and dimension for posts for an 8' high fence? From what i've read pressure treated pine lasts the longest when in contact with soil and is better than cedar. Also, in another thread someone mentioned that a 4"x4" post may not be strong enough for an 8' board on board solid privacy fence exposed to wind - is that generally true?

For a solid privacy fence I would certainly go larger than 4x4. My preference would be to use 6"x6" x 12' long pressure treated.

The general rule for posts is to have 1/3 of it buried in the ground. For an 8' high fence you'll be digging about 48" deep which is deeper than many augers and hand post hole diggers can go (many reach their limit around 30" deep). You may need some special(ish) tools to dig holes deep enough.
