Waterproofing a fence joint

I am putting in a fence with 4x4s and I cut into them a c-shaped "joint" to put in my horizontal 2x4s.
So, would you put anything into the space to prevent moisture such as asphalt or caulking?
Thanks

If you cut or notch a treated post you should always brush something on the cuts. CopperCote or Anchorseal 2 are the ones I have used.

Fences typically do not get notched as it weakens the posts.
