Fence post extension (4x4)

I have to add a 2 feet extension on my wood fence post (4x4x8 with 2 below the the ground)) How would you attach the extension? Would 2 of these tie plate work ok with one on each side (L+R) leaving front and back exposed? thanks.
Any other ideas or suggestions?

Yea, those brackets will work if your OK with how it looks. I hope your fence is an open design to let the wind blow through as it doesn't sound like your posts are set deep enough to stick so high out of the ground. 8' is a lot of leverage for just two feet in the ground.

Those brackets are intended to be used with vertical loads not horizontal like the wind load on a fence.

They will likely fold over!

There really is no practical way to extend a fence post that is going to be secure.

Also as the height goes up the anchoring into the ground needs to be greater!

I agree with Marq, those will not hold up. After one mild wind storm it will collapse. Would do better with 2 x 4 sistered to the two pieces. But even that will not be very strong.

Thank you guys, the fence was there when I move, the posts stand 6 feet, so I am assuming they are 8 feet long with 2 on the ground. The idea is to add a horizontal open trellis type of extension area for climbing plants so it will be open and with only a few horizontal 2 inch boards. Is it possible to replace the post with 10 feet ones without taking out the fence? (standard vertical wood fence).

You can take the next section of fence off the post and move it out of the way temperately. Should be able to pull nails or unscrew it.

Removing the panels between the posts, just to replace posts and then reinstall the panels is a lot of work for little visual gain. If your fence has any age on it the panels might fall apart as you remove them. If it were me, I'd probably sister 2x4's on each side of the posts extending from the bottom rail up through the top rail the 2 feet your looking for. Then attach the lattice/ horizontal 2" boards to the 2x4's. Note that this doesn't solve the issue of the leverage that will occur. As soon as the plants fill in you'll still have an effective 8' panel.

Actually, if it were me and I had to have it 8' and I was staying there for a while, I'd rebuild the fence with the posts set to the proper depth. Though costly and much work, will save a lot of issues down the line.

Thanks for your quick response, I understand and agree to that. But unfortunately money is very low and I can't do the work myself.

Might want to dig down on one and see just how long they are.
