Exterior 4 x 4 Splitting

I have a special hand rail I want to build using 4 x 4 posts and 2 x 2 rails. On the last one I did the 4 x 4s split in various places within a year.

For this next one, I picked out the best 4 x 4s I could find with no splits, and I let them dry out indoors for about a year. (still no splits) Will this be condition enough to at least help ensure the exterior posts won't split after I build it and it weathers?

If not, is there a conditioner, (not paint) that I can put on the rails to help keep it split free? --Something that, preferably, won't change the appearance of the wood much? Thanks!

Wood shrinks as it dries, the odds are if it doesn't have any splits after a yr it will be ok. ..... but it will still need protection from the elements - like a good deck stain, refreshed as needed.
