rifle
I have a hunting rifle Remington model#700 in 30-06.Would you suggest free floating the barrel or a full bedding job or leave as is.A freind is quite capable of doing it for me as he used to work with a gunsmith. He is also a expert marksman and groundhog killer.Should I buy another toy instead?Oops I was thinking out loud again.lol.Marturo have you ever shot a 458 winchester?I like the way they look.

Hi Davo
Yes I think every Rifle that can be ( Lever Guns excluded) should have the Action bedded just to get all you can from your Rifle. Allways freefloat the barrel after a bedding job, unless it seems that a pressure point, will improve the accuracy, some need pressure points most don't.

__________
A fine Cartridge for large Bear & other large Dangerious Game. Like many straight walled cartridges it has a big push, instead of the brain numbing hit of a 338 Win Mag.
I would own one if I lived in the far North, the 458 Win Mag is just a waste of powder in the lower 48 states. Do you handload or use Factory ammo? This cartridge cost a bunch for 20 compared to the 30-06.

Christmas is comming. Have you been a good boy this year LOL?
If your going to play pop goes the groundhog, I would go with a .223 or 22-250 instead.

Funny I had thought of making a bowling pin gun. You know like a Sabot (Say-bo) shotgun slug. Think of the trajectory at 3000 Feet per second. King of the Mountain.
I once shot a 44 mag 300 grain bullet at 10 ft into a bowling pin & it just poked it's soft point bullet, out the otherside. Is that one hard 8'' piece of wood or what?
LPG with Oxygen as a propellant or Black powder do you think?
BTW anyone reading this post has to understand that we are just dreaming, & only use Barret light 50s on big game like Groundhogs LOL
I do know a few guys with Civil War Mortors they made, one even shot a hole through one of the High Power # boards @ 200 yards. The other ball landed somewhere in the swamp to the North & has never been found to this day.
Davo why not a 50 BMG in a 30 pound single shot bolt action? Custom made once in a lifetime gun range ? There are some clubs who shoot the mile with their 50s.

Are we still?
Davo are we still using bowling balls? Have you got the springs, rubbers etc we will need to launch this ball? What Feet per second are we shooting for?
A pnumatic bowling ball Blow gun now will that be a mounted crew served weapon system or a sholder fired weapon LOL
How about a Ruger #1 in 458 Winchester Magnum? I think you deserve one. How big is your biggest Rifle now? Even a 3.5" 12 gauge pump, can kill brain cells after the first shot LOL

I was sorry to hear about the soda cans coming apart, as I have a mortar-in-process, that has been bored to accept beer cans (much easier to find around my house than soda cans). I have some heavy lumber for the carriage, some acme thread rod and nuts, etc. I'm trying to figure a way to crank it up and down, without getting too involved with moving parts and linkages.

beer cans
If the truth be known, a source of beer cans does not seem to be a problem. In fact, a rough estimate shows that I'll need approximately 42 1/2 mortars just to stay even. I know - it's rough, but somebody has to do it.

Davo you may want to check out the Savage Safari Express in .458 Mag. It's a very nice piece of work, SS bbl & action and the 3 Leaf Rear Sight combo is a ticket for quick range compensation. You can also get this new for about $850.
I've always had a thing for the larger calibers just for playing but it can get quite expensive to do much shooting. What is even more fun though is large caliber handgun.
I picked up a 454 Casull Taurus Raging Bull in the Professional Hunter Series. I love this gun more than any I've shot in quite a while. The black SS gives it a look that is incredible and the 6 1/2" bbl handles very well even though the large grip was a tad big for my hand but a little personal fitting made it work. I don't get many opportunites to shoot any more and when I go this and maybe my Old Army Ruger is usually the only thing I carry. I need to get some dies for it but so far just been shooting of the shelf.
