.22 cal scope rings

I am trying to install a scope on my Savage mod 24, 22/410 over/under.
I find that the .22 barrel has a 3/8" dovetail for .22 cal scope rings but the barrel is a very small diameter and the ring clamps do not go deep enough to engage the groove.
I took the rings and gun to our local sports shop to find all the .22 rings were the same as what I have.
The shop owner couldn't find anything in his catalogue on this gun requiring special mounts and suggested I file my rings untill they fit.
I set up a makeshift rig to try to machine them in my drill press but after removing some metal, realized I won't be able to do this with any precision.
I probably could set something up that would mill these but I don't really have the time. Gotta get those squirrels that are invading my place instead.

Anyone familiar with this rifle or issue?

I think I'll go buy several dozen of those for $36.95.

http://www.outdoorguides.com/outdoor...r%20Notes%2018 Way down toward the bottom of the page they list a M#24 Weaver style rings.

Millett makes a 3/8" ring that goes down very small, should work on your application.

.22 cal scope rings.

I own a 22-20 gage and put a 1in. scope on it a few years ago . I believe they were weaver mounts. They have two set screw in them and clamp the scope to the 22 scope slots very good. I have shoot 20 gage slugs in it for the last 1o years and its never come loose.
