There are a few places in maine where the cc is not allowed. Not sure about other states, but I have been trying for over 10 years to get them to publish a list as part of the cc application, "where you can't carry". Up here, school grounds, federal buildings, bars w/o food, police station, hospitals, and more, and I'm sure they know where, but just don't think it's necessary to inform anyone. FYI

Bud

Almost forgot, congratulations, unique feeling.

Congrats Airman and welcome to the club!

Minnesota has close to the same as Maine. Schools, fed buildings, police stations and buildings that have a sign stating not guns allowed. Funny thing is, the sign might as well as say "Criminals, Please rob us!"

Cool!! did you have to jump through hoops to get it? I figured the closer you are to WashDC the more big brother is watching. Be careful and secure it, as there not much worse than having a firearm stolen from your car.
Our state is entertaining legislation to modify our cc to allow carry.....period. Of course a courthouse or past the checkpoint charlie at an airport is off limits, but we can carry to restaurants, ball games, hospitals, most anywhere.
With the cc, comes responsibility I am sure you are aware.

Well..unless it changed a lot.....

When I was there...if you were Military (resident) or retired (Police, Sheriff, etc were all the same)...it was pretty much get printed and submit the forms. 30 days later or so..there it was in the mail. If you couldn't show proof of training..then you had to attend a course on safety and law and a proficiency test (which I heard was basically keep 'em on the paper and don't shoot yourself) but the cost wasn't that bad. Coulda changed.

Kinda funny...to get a CWP it was easier and cheaper in VA than it is here. They don't make exceptions for Military..so you have to attend a course. 150 for AZ only..something like 300 for AZ/NV/UT quals. Thats just for the course...not sure of the cost for the permit. Since we have open carry and only in the big towns or actual bars do you see the signs..its not a big deal for me. Though I'm not like the guys that carry a Super Redhawk in a chest holster at Wally World..or those that have a "tactical" thigh holster on....

I agree, Vic....concealed should mean "concealed". I don't advertise that I'm carrying. In fact SW .38 model 37 in an ankle holster is just fine with me. Hey, TG, don't try it in Sarasota with those gosh awful shorts and socks.....won't work.

They are trying to pass a law that will allow you to carry in bars as long as you don't drink. I'm to old for going to bars so it doesn't matter to me. It should pass now that we have a governor that swings to the right. It's still the same paid $50 got finger printed they did a back ground check. All I had was my hunters safety class certificate. Will not tell you how long ago that was!!!!! Then 4 weeks later it was in the mail box.

The application here is $100 plus you must go through an 8hr course and qualify (similar to Vic's qualification). Course IIRC was $150. The CCP is also the purchase permit that is good for 5 years so that is a big plus. Here people call it a concealed and carry permit, but the pistol does not have to be concealed as the permit says "Permit to carry a pistol". You just tend to get a lot of attention if your pistol is out in the open and you are not wearing a uniform.

Oh yeah, you can't drink here while carrying.

Want to kill an afternoon? Read up on the federal Gun Free School Zones Act which was enacted in 1990. Basically it prohibits firearms within 1'000 feet of a school. The Supreme Court knocked down much of the act in 1995 so in 1996 Congress fiddled with the law to bring sections of it back into affect....

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what this means: "It is unlawful to knowingly possess or discharge a firearm that has moved in or otherwise affected interstate or foreign commerce within 1,000 feet of a primary or secondary school."

Sort of like driving into Ohare airport in Chicago. Big sign on the main drive "NUCLEAR FREE ZONE". Gosh, guess that will keep the bomb from falling there!! Made me feel really safe.

Pilot Dane, in my town and even the local university, the main road passes right through the campus. The side of the road is the school. So are we allowed to drive US route 1 through town?

That is the fun of the law. It's pretty hard to tell if it is legal to drive by a school or not.

From what I get it is legal if you happen to be driving by while engaged in interstate commerce and I also think it is legal if you are on a public road that is used for interstate commerce so I think you are safe cruising down the interstate.

For me the law gets fuzzy is if you are driving on a local city street. Even more fuzzy; what if you are walking down the street or on the sidewalk? You are on the other side of the road in the public right of way but you are still within 1'000 feet of a school carrying a firearm. Worse yet, what if you are involved in a traffic accident within 1'000 feet of a school and your car is run off the road. You are no longer on the public right of way and within the magic 1'000 feet.

Airman-Congratulations and welcome to the club!

Now, do what most folks around here do when they get their CCW.
Slip your loaded gun into a holster, pull on your jacket and go walk around Wal-Mart.
