Remington 700 Feeding Propblems
Yep, this is the rifle from my help pick new rifle thread. The gun (Remington 700 with internal magazine in .308 Winchester) shoots well but it can't feed cartridges from it's internal magazine for squat. About half the time cycling the bolt does not feed a cartridge. This gun has the stock magazine spring and stamped steel follower.
Most commonly the cartridges does not rise high enough and the bolt passes 1/32" above without catching the cartridge. It seems worst with the first and last cartridge. The cartridges appear to be fully up against the magazine's lips and level (not a crooked follower) but still not rising high enough to feed. Poking at the cartridge does not move it to a higher position so it looks like the magazine is properly holding the cartridge in the wrong position. And in addition, sometimes the follower does bind and the cartridges are crooked which looks like a follower and/or spring problem.
Anyone have any tips or tricks I should try?
Last night I pulled the stock off and made sure the magazine box was properly located but I have not tried cycling cartridges through it yet (I don't cycle live cartridges in the house and I don't have any dummies to play with). I will also be looking for burrs and try tweaking the spring.

Thanks for the link. I found several others on that forum but not that one, and it seems to have more specific information.
Aligning the magazine box has taken care of 3/4 of the problem. Occasionally the follower is still sticking and not lifting the back end of the cartridge.
