Pieces of drywall to protect guns from moisture?
Normally, I use the silicone packets to protect my firearms from moisture while storing. But the silicone packets are overpriced on the Internet.
I once heard someone say that you can use pieces of drywall to protect guns from moisture. Is this true? If so, do you break into small chunks and remove the paper backing?

I don't think I would introduce drywall into a gun cabinet. My investment is worth more than such an experiment. I also don't think the sheetrock will absorb as much moisture as you would with silica gel.

If you don't want to buy silica absorbers just ask your friends to start keeping them for you. Tiny ones are often packed in with pills and larger ones with items shipped from overseas. You can also ask stores and manufacturers that work with imported items. Even clothing stores at the mall probably throw tons of them away that come packaged in with clothes. To recharge the packs I put them in a oven on low for several hours which dries them out and they are ready to go again.

If they are in a safe or cabinet...they make very low wattage heaters that work well. If they are in a closet or similar I'd use the storage bags for long term protection.
Does it get that humid in Tucson? Up here it only gets above about 35% when its actively raining...lol.

I've never seen exposed drywall in a gunsafe. It may be embedded in the interior wall covering, but not exposed. And how would you make a shelf out of sheetrock?

I think the trouble with most products including sheetrock is that if it's exposed to the air for a while it will absorb what moisture it can and then it ceases to work. The nice thing about the small silica packages is that you can recharge them instead of throwing them away.

They make silica cans for safes which are easily rechargable. Guns cost a lot more, I would not hesitate to buy one for mine.

You can buy packets of moisture absorbing silica crystals at boat & marine supply stores. Used to keep moisture out of covered boats that are dry docked during non seasonal usage or boats in slips during non usage times.
