ameyer, it may be because of the holiday, but some may avoid answering your post because the code requirements and rules of thumb may not meet Michigan code. A call to your local inspector should get you the answers you need.
Hi.
The house I just bought has a fieplace that "goes through" the wall to the other room. So both rooms have drywall walls that butt up against the irregular brick surface on the sides of the fireplace.
It looks kind of crappy, because the irregularities of the brick produce gaps between fireplace and wall edge. The previous owner had essentially custom carved the edge of the drywall to follow the contour of the bricks, but I had to tear out his walls, and I don't want to do another custom carving.
Is there some sort of molding that I could put there to make the gaps less noticable? It seems to me that any straight molding material will not match the irregular brick surface, unless its flexible or something.
I'd appreciate any help!Read More
I'm moving into a house (renting) that I have been told by the last tennants has a old coal fireplace. They have said that they burn the small store bought logs in the very back and that only this way do they have no smoke entering the house. This sounds a little crazy to me but I would like to have use of it (not with coal). Other than chimney sweeping what do I need to know about this type of fireplace and how do I keep it clean & safe?
Thanks for any info
