fireplace remodel

I have a two story fireplace/chimney that currently is covered in fake marble and drywall. I want to redo the whole thing in dry stacked stone. My problem is--it has to be a fake stone that together with all wire, mortar, etc. can't excede 11 lbs/sq. foot. An architectural engineer has checked out the supports in our basement and has given me the max. of 11lbs/sq. ft. Any fake stone/applying materials I have looked at exceeds that. Any one know of a real looking fake stone that is very very light?

If you have no options finding light weight stone, can you look into heat tolerant paints with finishing techniques to look like stone?

Insulation in Chimney

My house has a chimney, really no more than a flue chase that is “kicked” out on the back side of the house. The flue for a zero clearance N.G. fireplace extends up the chase. Is it a good idea to insulate this area inside the chimney? With out any sheeting over the insulation, I worry about the insulation falling down on top of the fireplace. Is it code to insulate these areas? Would rigid foam be a better idea? Thanks, abkentRead More

Cleaning brick around fireplace

My fireplace is part of my original 1926 home. There is a lot of black soot absorbed into the brick, most of it above the fireplace, and a lot along the side of the fireplace. Some of this brick may have actually been baked darker in places when it was made, but since the brick above is so much darker than the brick next to the fireplace, I'm sure much of it is from long term smoke from burning logs in the fireplace. I would like to remove as much of this as possible. I used a spray-on cleaner from the local hardward store which lightened the brownish red to a redder brick, but removed little of the black soot. I then tried muriatic acid which did nothing but make breathing a challenge. Any advice?Read More
