Cleaning "rock" fireplace

I have a recently installed (3-4 months ago) artificial "rock" fireplace. The masons left some mortar residue on the rock that needs cleaning. Since these "rocks" are made from concrete I'm concerned that whatever I use to clean may etch the surface and/or remove the color. Any ideas? Thanks!

Try some vinegar using a tooth brush. Try it in an area that isn't to noticable.
