white residue on brick

My basement brick fireplace has a fine white crystaline powder around the base. When I moved in the first thing I had to do was go up and gunk the top of the chase so I beleve there was some water damage inside. Anyone have an idea how to take it off?

Removing efflorescence on brick

These mineral salts leached from the brick due to your moisture problem. Removal maybe as simple as brushing off. Most mineral salts are water soluble. A mixture of white vinegar and water may be effective. There are commercial brick cleaners available. If your moisture problem has not be corrected, the salts will tend to reoccur.
