Wood size for woodstove

Question Wood size for woodstove

This is my first year living in a house with a front-loading wood stove. How can I tell what size wood I should buy? (Surely it can take pieces longer than than the door opening is wide?)

Open the door. Stick a yardstick in the opening back until you hit something solid. Read the number on the stick. Subtract an inch or two so the door will clear easily when the door shuts.

Thanks for the quick response. BTW, can you recommend any books or resources on keeping wood stoves going over long periods of time? The only time I've heated with a wood stove was when I house-sat for a friend, and I couldn't figure out how to bank the fire. I was a popsicle every morning...
