Does anyone know about an heat exchanger grate for a wood burning masonry fireplace? I'm trying to keep all the heat from going up the chimney and put some back into the room. These come with and without a blower. Are they worth the money?

I built mine out of 3/8" black iron pipe and circulate water thru it...then to basebd radiators around the house.....fireplace heats the whole house

Yucky red brick

Our fireplace is done in old red brick. You can see the places where they've repaired the mortar - some is light and some is dark. Is there anything we can do to the brick/mortar to make it look better? Paint it all or paint the mortar? Any suggestions welcome. We use the fireplace all the time.
