gas fireplace vent free vs direct vent

am looking at a gas fireplace for the living room,really onll for atmosphere and not needed for heat wonder if anyone has experience or can direct to links re pros/cons of both types,leaning towaards vent free given easier install, someone had posted they may be illegal soon is this true/ thanks and happy holidays john

Vent free or vented gas fireplace

Go with the vented gas fireplace if you have an option.

Some people are extra sensitive to the odors associated with vent free units. Go to www.hearth.com for a wealth of info on gas fireplaces. Vent free fireplaces are already illegal in many areas.

sealing chimney tee with tee cap

i have a fireplace on the first floor. directly above it on the second floor a franklin stove was installed and hooked into the chimney via a tee. i have removed the stove ( i live in tampa, florida and would rather have the room space) and i want to close off the tee. i want to continue to use the main fireplace 10-20 times per season so i want to seal up the tee and make sure it's safe. can i just slap on an 8" tee cap and seal it with chimney adherent and put some drywall in front of it. should i put some type of insulation between the end of the tee and the drywall that will rest against it? this part of the chimney is probably about 10-12 feet above the main fireplace so i don't expect it to get very hot. any help would be greatly appreciated so that i don't burn the house down! thanks, adamRead More
