Question cleaning fieldstone fireplace

i have a fieldstone fireplace,its about 10 years old and has never been cleaned,the stones are full fieldstone. i have been told that you can use an acid to clean them, to scary for me big mess and dangerous. the stones are kind of dull and need some cleaning. what other product is available to clean the stones,something that is safer and not quit so messy. thanks for any help. ed

I would suggest contacting your local fireplace/wood stove dealer for products that are available and easy to use. I have attached a link for products that do the job quite well and are reasonable;
