Flue for Gas fireplace

The house I bought in 1982, had been remodled in 1950. The existing fireplace still stands but they took the flue out. I want to install a set of gas burning logs, but need to vent it. There is still the opening at the top of the fire box, but what use to be there for a chimney was removed. How do I go about redoing or adding a venting system so I can use my new logs?

Flue

I suggest for visit your local fireplace shop. Depending on the type of system you buy, will determine the type of flue you will need. Some fireboxes don't need any flue. Most do however and it is best to hire an expert for the job.

Downdraft problem in fireplace

I have a masonry fireplace (concrete block with clay flue liner) in my new house (my “builder” was a criminal who not only defrauded but also used subs of questionable skill). The chimney is approximately 50’ high with fireplace in basement and one on main floor. When I have fire in main fireplace I get some smoke in room (opening is 46”W X 42” high) but I get a lot of smoke in the basement even with damper closed. I think the problem on main floor may be the opening is too tall but need advice as to how to make sure I find the real problem.Read More

cleaning fieldstone fireplace

i have a fieldstone fireplace,its about 10 years old and has never been cleaned,the stones are full fieldstone. i have been told that you can use an acid to clean them, to scary for me big mess and dangerous. the stones are kind of dull and need some cleaning. what other product is available to clean the stones,something that is safer and not quit so messy. thanks for any help. edRead More
