stove or insert?

Hello,
My question is regarding fireplace inserts...We have an old home 1920's with a masonary chimney...When we purchased the home the fireplace had be sealed up and a small airtight wood stove was put in its place...My wife and I would like to remove the old stove and put in ethier an insert or a newer stove ...this will be our main source of heat( we also have a oil furnace) and would like some information regarding installation as well as efficiancy of both products...Thanks

I guess the first thing is to provide you with products that will tell you more than I on what they do and choices. Second thing would be to have a professional come to your home to assess what can and cannot be done. This would be my suggestion in your case. You will have to see what is required to do either and meet codes within your area;

Fireplace surround Plans needed

wood versus vent free

My wife and I recently moved into a home that has a fireplace with gas hookup. We purchased vented logs and installed them in our gas fire place. They looked faked therefore we took them back. Last night I purchased vent free gas logs. I have not installed them yet, but I'm thinking that they are not going to offer that realism that we were use to with a real fireplace. After reading the manual I became leary of carbon monixide, soot, etc. It was mentioned in another email that the key is to use them only "short term". We are thinking about taking them back and just use real wood. Is there any precaution that I should be aware of regarding using the fire place to burn real wood? I looked in the chimney and everything appears fine. I didn't know if there was a such thing as a fireplace being built to handle only vent free gas logs and not wood. Can I use the gas line to start the fire if we opt to wood? I appreciate your time. Thanks, MichaelRead More
