cracks in prefab firebrick

I have a 14 year old prefab fireplace/chimmey system. The firebrick in the back of the firebox has cracks in it. Is this a do it yourself repair project or should I bring in the pro's.

thanks

It sounds as though you are describing a Zero Clearance fireplace. If so, the bricks in the back are not really individual bricks, but, a panel made to appear that way. The panel is simple to replace, provided you have the correct part. Any brand name, model #, brought to your local Stove & Fireplace shop will help.

If the cracks are hairline in nature there is really no need to replace the panel. Larger cracks expose the metal backing and the problem with that is wear on the metal.

Hope that helps.
