Removing fireplace

We have lived in our house for almost 30 years, we are now thinking of removing the fireplace. We do not use it anymore as we have a woodstove down cellar and use that.
It has about a 4 inch step up that has slate on it. My husband is concerned as to what may be under that step. Could it possibly be all cement or what?

Help

Martha,

Your guess is as good as mine. It could be cement, brick coverd with cement, block covered with cement...you just have to take your chances when you find out.

Is it really necessary to take it out, regardless if you are using it or not? You may want to leave it for future owners.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!
