Gas to wood-burning--can we do it?

We have a fireplace that uses gas logs. We want to cap off the gas line, remove the gas logs and use wood. The outside chimney is not brick--it is vinyl siding. There is a switch on the wall that allows heat to be blown into the room from the fireplace. Can we convert this to a wood-burning fireplace?

melissahh,

This has been asked in the past and the answer is simple if you can find out some stuff first. If your fireplace was originally built or designed to burn wood then converting it back to wood should be ok but you really need a professional fireplace installer to look at all of it to ensure that it can be done.

Let's assume that you have a prefabricated metal fireplace which burns gas only, then converting it to wood is a hazard condition. The firebox and chimney system used on gas fireplaces are very different and they can't tolerate the high temperatures produced by burning wood. The vent system on gas units is quite different - gas exhausts consist mainly of moisture and fumes, whereas the burning of wood creates high flammable and corrosive residues and burn at a much higher temperature than a gas venting system cannot tolerate.

Burning wood in a fireplace and vent system designed only for gas could result in a house fire and/or an explosion. Don't burn wood in this fireplace until you can determine with absolute certainty that it is a wood burning fireplace and chimney system!

Converting a wood fireplace to gas is relatively a simple issue and is common as we all become more energy efficient - at least in not cutting up trees. Trying to convert from gas to wood is altogether another issue and this will also entail venting and draft issues that only a professional can address and ensure your safety.

Hope this helps!

Gas to Wood

Doug Aleshire is correct, is there glass on the font of the fireplace? If the answer is yes and it is ONE SOLID PIECE (not opening doors) the answer is NO you cannot change it to wood. Look around the front of the fireplace if it is a prefab metal box and see if you find the manufacturers tag with a model number, if it says on that tag "This is not a Fireplace, it is a Gas Appliance" the answer again is NO.

Good Luck
