wood burning fireplace?

is there such a thing as a free standing prefabricated wood burning fireplace?

Yes.
And there are prefabricated "zero clearance" fireplaces that are triple-walled so that they can be placed directly against wood framing. You have a choice of facades from faux rocks to "brick" to wood mantles, etc.
Check in the Yellow Pages, big box stores, fireplace stores, etc.

Free Standing Wood Burning Fireplace

Yes there are free standing fireplaces, they are made by a company called MALM Fireplaces, they are very expensive and hard to find, most of the time you have to order them and they use a 9 or 10 in. pipe which makes the price higher yet. You might consider wood burning stoves, I have two in my house and they are the new technology type, good clearances and good looking and very efficient in wood consumption and put out LOTS of heat, they have glass fronts to enjoy the fire and you don't have to worry about sparks popping out! You also go to bed and not worry about them, that is what they are designed for.
