Safe height for mantle

I'm builidng a new mantle for our wood-burning brick fireplace. I need to know what a safe height (minimum) is for the mantle. My wife bought a big ole' mirror that we hung abve the fire box and it doesn't leave me much room between the bottom of the mirror and the opening of the fire box - that's why I ask.

thanks,
Rob

The height issue around here is the minimum distance (12" in these parts) between the fireplace opening and any combustible material. As long as there's at least 12" of clearance it's a matter of appearance.

Okay - that al least gives me something to go by. I have more than 12" so I think I'm safe there.

thanks Dave.
