Fireplace Wall

I notice that the back wall of my fireplace is 'bubbling' inward. I don't think it is the actual brick, as there is some black piece in the back of the fireplace.

Any ideas on the cause of this? Does this need to be fixed? How?

Thanks

As I look closer, I now see that there is some sort of Metal insert bolted into the fireplace. It is this insert that is "bubbling" - I assume from the prior owner making some really hot fires.

Question is: Is this something that needs to be replaced? What is the danger (if there is one)?

Thanks

This don't sound good to me. That sounds like a creosote buildup. When was the last time you cleaned the fireplace and flue???? You should have this done once a year at least.

I don't think it is steel - seems to be some kind of a metal insert. Black metal on 3 sides containing the fire, and it is "bolted" in.
