Replacing Fireplace Tile

The tile on our fireplace (non-gas) was a horrible color so we decided to replace. upon removing the old tile i discovered that it was covering up vents directly above and below the fireplace opening. there doesnt appear to be any kind of fan installed so what purpose do these vents serve? is it save to recover them with the new tile?

Thanks!

Sounds like you could have a steel heatalater also call other names. When you hmave a fire going the cool air would come in at the bottom and hot air comes out the top there. There are fans that can go in the bottom intakes. If you have all steel in side the fireplace I woud let them open for sure. Take a blow gun or hair drier and blow in the bottom see if you dont get air out the top outlets.
