Fireplace

I would like to build a fireplace in the living room of what is a converted stone garage from 1920. It's a large room and three walls are external with only one wall shared with the kitchen. If I don't want to build a chimney up through the house, I guess I have to use one of the external walls. What is the best way to go about doing this? What kind of venting system would I need to use to minimize damage to the house? Can I break through a stone wall alone or do I need to hire a professional? I'd be very grateful for any advice. Hello Robert:

You mentioned three exterior walls on which you could or would like to build the fireplace on.

Building a fireplace then should pose no problem if you have the needed space on the outside of the wall for a chimney. <Check with your local city codes first!>

Should you prefer a chimney inside a wall, now you have a whole new playing field. A rather difficult one to say the least.

Using this option, I would highly suggest you hire a locally licensed building or heating contractor. A list may be provided at your city halls building department.

Failure to properly install any wood burning fireplace or pot belly stove correctly and to local city codes can prove to be not only a fire hazard but a fatal mistake.
