Jazzing up a dull mantle?

We have a nice but dull mantle, about
5ft long, 6inches down, and about 12 inches
out...Has anyone ever attached Crown
molding or any decorative wood to
jazz things up.....I need ideas!

Yes...you can use the existing mantle as a substraight to attach just about anything. You can dress it up with wood moulding, tile or rock...just don't get the wood too close to the opening of the fireplace.

There are some good picture books on fireplaces you should probably check out for ideas. Check out the link to fireplace gallery at the bottom for a few ideas.

Also, if you know a contractor who is good with design ideas have them come over one morning and give them a cup of hot coffee in exchange for ideas.
