Cleaning interior of an insert
#1
Just bought a "previously owned" home and the fireplace insert (wood burning) is completely black. The side and back panels are some type of masonry with a brick pattern, but aren't actual bricks. What would be the proper procedure to clean this off.

Fireplaces are black. But just in case, you should definately have the chimney swept or at least inspected by a pro. This should have been done before you bought the house but if you didn't formally request it, it probably was not done. Building a fire could be a real hazard if the previous owner didn't do it. Welcome to the joys of home ownership
