Install Your Own Freestanding Gas Stove

I do most projects around the house myself. We are going to buy a freestanding gas stove for the basement. I am going to hire a plumber to run the gas line to the area. I have been toying with the idea of running the pipe and venting to the outside myself. It will be a horizontal termination. I am aware that it has to be 12" from ground and 12" from window or door where it exits the house. Is this a project that can be handled by a fairly handy person? The wood stove salesman told me it is not "rocket science."

I agree that it is not rocket science. I have installed a freestanding woodburner in the past and it wasn't that hard. One word of advice though. Check with your Homeowners Insurance agent. Where I am now, I am thinking about installing a fireplace. Just for info, I called my agent. He told me that a built-in fireplace would not change my premiums and no inspection was necessary. Then he mentioned that a free-standing STOVE would have to be inspected by them and it would raise my premiums by 10 %. While it is true that you can do most things you want to in your own house, the insurance company does not have to pay for damage done by your mistakes. Phone call is free and may save you problems down the road. Good luck.

That's a great piece of advice. Are there any install tips or tricks that i should be aware of?

Make sure you understand the directions. If you have a question, ask it. Use the best materials as you only want to do this once. Take it slow and do not rush. Better to take more time than have to fix something. Most instructions are pretty straight-forward and you should have no problems.

Thanks, the salesman said they could fill in the blanks with any questions i may have. Just got off the phone with homeowners and they have no underwriting policies as far as the stove. So, it's a go. Thanks again. I am going to get a reputable brand like Heat N Glo or Vermont Castings. I assume they would have good technical support if needed.

DIYER,
congrats on your decision to purchase a gas stove.
You'll love it.
I bought one for my basement project. It's convenient to operate and it keeps things toasty warm.

Be sure to pay attention to the efficiency ratings and BTU ratings.

Thanks.
We are really excited. It's going to be a great feature in the finished basement. Trying to do all my research and make a good decision within our budget.

My Hearthstone gas stove is great. It replaced a wood burning stove. My insurance didn't have any problems with insurance coverage and premiums didn't go up. I got a remote control so i could turn on/off and set temp level because i had no good place to put awall thermostat.
You might want to get on the web and check out stove manufactures site. They often have installation and parts listings.
Good luck

Hearthstone -- Poor Service From Manufacturer

I bounght a Hearthstone Stove several years ago and have been trying to get rid of a smell. The manufacturer was not very helpful and, consequently, would not recommend this brand.
