Chimney Parts

OK, I have a problem, but before I can address that problem I have another problem.

I don't know the names of chumney parts so I will do my best to explain. With my chimney is a knob on the outsode of the mantle, through the brick above the firebox where the wood burns. This knob is, in some way, related to the damper. If I knew the name of this knob I could explain better.

The knob seems like a way to open and close the fireplace damper but the knob is missing some parts (I think) inside the firebox where it connects to the damper. If I look up to the top of the firebox I can see a handle there I can use to open and close the damper but would like to get this other knob working because I think it will open and close the damper from the outside of the fireplace.

Anyone have any idea of what I am talking about?

What you describe is exactly like my fireplace. That knob is indeed for operating the damper. If it doesn't, something is broken or has come loose. When I moved in, mine didn't work either. The company I hired to clean and inspect the chimney fixed it for me.

fireplace combustion air

hey guys, has anyone ever vented a wood burning fireplace to use outside air for combustion ? fireplace is all brick, on an exterior wall. exterior of house is brick. no ash dump,raised hearth full width (apx 5'), single flu with a sheet metal cap. i usually crack a window next to the fireplace to stop infiltration through the rest of the house. but by the time the fire goes out it can get a little cool in the room by morning. i don't like glass doors. i thought a pair of 2" or 3" horizontal holes with steel liners into the bottom of the firebox with some louvers and spark arrestors along with a pivoted cover would do the trick. i have a core drill and bits from 2 to 12 inches, welder, etc. and access to a full machine shop. i won't take this one on until after the burning season as my wife would kill me if i disabled the fireplace in the middle of winter. anyone care to play the devil's advocate and tell me why this is stupid ?Read More

too much dust

have a new Jotul wood stove that is awesome, however over the past month that it has been burning non-stop, we have noticed a significant and troubling buildup of dust on all furniture and counter surfaces. As there are no signs of smoke or smoke odors, it would seem that the short sections of triple-walled stove pipe going into the inspected and sealed masonary chimney are not to blame. My only guess is that when we go to side-load the stove, even though we open the damper and wait for the fire to clearly intensify and head up the flue, some amount of particulate matter must come out and then circulate throughout the room and house on the heated air currents. If that is the case perhaps there is an air purifier/filter that will pull most of this out of the air before it settles???? Thanks in advance for any help/info!Read More
