New furnace new venting still smoke in chimney!

Okay, I know nothing about furnaces. I had a new furnace installed a few years ago and they have what looks like pvc piping going outside the side of the house where the smoke goes. They told me the newer furnaces no long use chimneys.
So, can anyone tell me why I see occasional smoke coming out the chimney yet?

You see smoke coming out of your chimney when there's nothing vented into it?

Some furnaces do use pvc pipe for inducted draft venting. There are still plenty of types of heating equiptment that utilize atmospheric venting and chimneys.

I suspect the OP has a high efficiency furnace that does not utilize a conventional chimney but PVC pipe as the exhuast flue.

I have seen install where the pipe was run up and out the original chimney (I though they had to be near horizontal but I am not an HVAC guy). Since the OP states theirs is through the wall, (BTW, you generaly have 2, one for intake and one for exhaust) I wonder if only the fresh air is through the wall and the exhast is through the chimney.

If so, the emmissions could be steam or is it possible you have a gas water heater vented through this chimney (I believe it should be in a seperate flue but can be within the same overall chimney structure but not sure of this, I am not an HVAC tradesman)
