I'm renovating a small, 2 story farmhouse. A wood stove on the first floor (about 525 square feet, completely open except for the small bathroom, stove almost dead center in the space) is the primary head source. There is no plumbing to the second floor, which has four rooms- two decent sized, two very small, and the building is being done so that the second floor can be closed off if needed when very cold (door to stairway, first floor ceiling is being insulated). I want to put floor registers/vents with closeable louvers from the first floor into the two larger rooms upstairs, so we can get some heat up there if we want it. My intuition tells me to locate them as close to over the wood stove as I can. Is there any reason why I shouldn't put them there? Thanks

I have an opportunity to pick up some scrap lumber from a nearby home remodel. Is the lumber used for building homes good firewood? Looks to be standard plywood and some darker (redwood?) wood, unpainted and untreated. Some has come out of the home and some is scrap pieces from the new installation. Thanks.
