fireplace discovered!

we have lived in our home for 3 years now and heating bills are big money. we discovered that we have a existing fireplace behind a wall in living room.so curious,we opened the wall and it was sealed off with brick. so we knocked the brick out and sure enough an old fireplace sits small and cozy looking there in the wall. chimney is all clear and appears fine. with the high prices of natural gas, we are willing to maintain an alternant source of heat but have no clue on what to do next! any information reguarding our dilima would be very helpful.

First get an expert to check the flue for any cracked pipe or fire problems. Next, since some fireplaces were designed for gas logs, while others can handle wood, have the expert advise you as to which type you have. Does it have a damper? If not, one will need to be installed.
Also, as the heat from the fire warms the room a bit, the chimney is pulling out both heat from the fire and heat from your furnace. This actually could raise your total fuel cost.
